Acupuncture

Acupuncture is Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy that involves inserting fine needles at selected points on the skin to balance the body's energy (Chi), thereby treating and preventing disease. It is used to treat a wide range of common ailments, relieve pain and promote general health.

The World Health Organisation recognises more than 100 conditions that can be helped by acupuncture.

Acupuncture has been used in China for more than 3,000 years and for many centuries in other Asian countries such as Japan and Korea.

At the start of your consultation you will be asked a series of questions, which help us understand the current state of your health and the cause of any health conditions that you may be experiencing. The pulses on your wrists are felt and we take a look at your tongue in order to add to our diagnosis of the balances and imbalances in your body's energy (Chi) and organ systems. We then choose certain acupuncture points for treatment, to rebalance you and help correct your specific health conditions.

Once you are lying comfortably on the treatment couch, very fine stainless steel needles are placed into the skin at these points. This is quick and painless. Some people feel an energetic sensation as the needles are inserted, often a tingling feeling. All needles are single-use, sterile, and of the highest quality.

You then relax for about 20 minutes with the needles in place. Many patients find this so soothing, they often fall asleep once the needles are in place.

At the end of the session the needles are removed and any necessary dietary  /  lifestyle advice is given. Initial consultations last up to 1 1/2 hours. Follow-up sessions last 45 minutes.

Other related therapies such as moxa and cupping may be used alongside acupuncture. Moxa uses warmth which is introduced either to the needles or near the body, to boost your energy and/or eliminate problems such as muscle and joint pain. Cupping involves placing glass suction cups on areas of the body to increase circulation and eliminate pain and clear blockages from the body.
Cupping and moxa have also existed in Western traditional (folk) medicine for many centuries.

Acupressure

Acupressure is the use of fingertip pressure on acupuncture points instead of the insertion of needles. The aim is the same, to facilitate the flow of Chi energy in the body. Acupressure can be very effective for children, and is an option for adults who have a strong fear of needles.

Chinese Herbs

Chinese Herbs are a very powerful and effective system of therapy, that shares the same Chinese Medical principles of understanding the balances/imbalances in the body's energy and organs as acupuncture. We give our patients herbal formulas in the form of easy to take and cost-effective tablets, suitable to the demands of modern living. Herbs can be used as a stand-alone treatment, or in conjunction with Acupuncture - a very effective combination. All our herbs are plant-based and thoroughly tested for purity.

Dietary and Lifestyle Advice

Chinese Medicine considers the lifestyle and dietary habits of the patient crucial in achieving wellness. The dietary theory is based on the principle of balancing the energies and substances of the body through eating foods with appropriate qualities, in terms of being yin or yang, hot or cold, damp or dry, and so on - and avoiding foods that do not suit an individual's condition. This varies according to climate and the individual makeup and condition of the patient. Chinese Medicine Dietary theory has been tried and tested over several thousand years to the current day, and is unique and highly effective.

Lifestyle, such as sleep patterns, exercise, alcohol and tobacco, emotional life, and mental habits is also central to achieving optimum health. Some principles are universal, and some apply specifically to the individual.

We analyse your condition precisely and give dietary & lifestyle advice that is tailor-made to you.

Computerised Stress Monitoring

We use the latest computerised technology to measure your underlying stress levels, within your central nervous system. This technology measures Heart Rate Variability and Heart Rate Coherence via a small sensor placed on your fingertip. Results are stored and can be charted, showing your progress towards a lower-stress state over time.
